Pacific Grove, CA
The coastal city of Pacific Grove, CA, is located in Monterey County on the northern tip of the Monterey Peninsula. Founded in 1875 on donated acreage from the Pacific Land Improvement Company, the community now covers almost three square miles of land, housing a population nearing 16,000 people.
Pacific Grove incorporated in 1889 and became an artists’ haven well into the 20th century. Author John Steinbeck once lived in a cottage owned by his father, the Monterey County treasurer. Pacific Grove today maintains numerous Victorian-era houses, some of which have become bed and breakfast inns. Annual traditions include the Butterfly Parade in October, the Feast of Lanterns in July, and the Good Old Days Festival in April. Pacific Grove was the last dry town in California and there are still no stand-alone bars to this day.
