The city of Marina, CA, is located in Monterey County, along Highway 1 about eight miles north of the city of Monterey. Incorporated in 1975 as the newest city on the Monterey Peninsula, Marina covers almost nine square miles of land with a population approaching 22,000 people.
William Locke-Paddon founded the town on 1,500 acres of land he purchased, and the Marina post office opened in 1916. Much of the city’s history and growth is tied to Fort Ord, the former U.S. Army post that closed in 1994. Today, Marina includes part of the campus of Cal State Monterey Bay, as well as the Veterans Transition Center. Marina holds several popular annual events, including a Labor Day Parade, Otter Fest and the Marina Air Faire. Fort Ord Dunes State Park opened in 2009, with access from Marina.
